Where are the clean tables????

Whatever happened to clean tables in restaurants? Where did good customer service disappear to?

I remember when I was growing up, when we would go to a restaurant to eat, the tables were clean and ready for a person to sit down and order. That seems to be few and far between anymore.

My husband and I went to a well known pizza place one evening. We ordered at the counter, then went to a table to wait for our pizza to be brought out. There were several empty tables, so I chose the one that was the cleanest of the dirty ones. I told my husband that when the pizza was brought out, I was going to ask for the table to be wiped off.

When the waitress came out of the kitchen with the pizza, I asked her if she would please wipe the table off for us. She sat our pizza down on another table, which was also dirty, and walked to the counter to get a rag. She came over to our table, wiped it off, then flung the rag back to the counter over the tops of the clean silverware container. She didn't speak one word to us...I guess it was a passive aggressive way for her to let us know she was displeased with us.

Another girl came out of the back and proceeded to wipe tables down. Each time she finished one, she would fling the rag at the counter, just as the other girl had done, over the top of the clean silverware tray. No one looked very happy in their jobs. No one appeared friendly or eager to serve. It seemed to be "just a job."

I looked around the room, and all the tables were dirty. Since there were only a few customers eating, it would have been easy to get all of the tables cleaned off quickly, and they would have been ready for the next person to arrive.

I have noticed that fast food restaurants are real bad about cleaning off the tables, even if the employees are standing around with nothing much to do...no one is in a hurry to clean tables anymore. I have eaten more times than I can count at tables that still have stuff left behind from other diners, and I do not like it.

I think it is a general lack of caring about the job, caring about the customers, and being lazy. It seems like so many want to wait for others to do the job...problem is, the job doesn't get done by anyone.

I would fire the whole bunch of them if they were my employees...I would hire people who wanted to work and who cared about doing a good job...

So what do you all think? What is it like in other areas of the country? Are restaurants doing a good job where you live?

I have wanted to fill out suggestion forms for the managers, but most of the time there aren't any, and if there are, I don't know what to do with them if I fill one out...if the waitress or server gets it, they will more than likely throw it away...

They need to know what kind of people they have working for them when the boss is away.

If it's a chain, you'd be better off calling the corporate office to comment, complain, etc. I would fully blame that on the management. If he/she was effective at the job, meager little five minute jobs like cleaning all the tables would be done.

That is exactly what I think.

I hadn't thought about calling the corporate office...but that is an excellent idea! Thank you for your thoughts!

I sent a letter to the public health dept. before...they apparently didn't check it out.

I think I am going to do what Shel said and contact the corporate office about these places...there are just far too many of them, (when it really shouldn't be any of them)...there is no reason the tables can't be wiped off and things kept clean...

The mistake you seem to have made was eating in a place at all that is not clean.

I look around before ordering. If I walk up to a table and it's nasty I go to the register ask for the manager and explain why I'm leaving.

The more people do this the more likely they will begin to get the idea that it is unacceptable. If you ever want to know how clean a restaurant really is go to the rest room first. If it's nasty you can be sure the kitchen and seating area is as well.

As far as quality service I think it's a thing of the past as this generation has proven itself to be lazy and unconcerned.

It certainly appears that way!

Yes, that is good advice to go and tell the manager! My husband tells me not to worry about it when I tell him I don't want to eat someplace...so I keep the peace and use the tray or napkins...

But truth is, it is almost all restaurants in this part of the country, (except the best ones), that I have noticed this in...I don't know why it is this way here, because where we go to eat is not some slum of a town, but a nice area...you would not expect that...I wondered if it was this part of the country or something, because I know that where I came from it was not this way.

I think it really just depends on the specific restaurant.

Whenever I go into a restaurant for the first time, I visit the restroom because the way the bathroom is kept will likely reflect how clean the kitchen is.

I have noticed that fast food restaurants are real bad about cleaning off the tables

Reason number 427(b) to avoid fast food places.

Bonnie- So sorry for your experience!

I've had bad/disinterested service all across the country, but, nothing like you describe.

I spent my early years (15-17) as a waitress and I would have been fired with that attitude! Over the years, I've had to fall back on that job to make ends meet, but, would have died before acting like that!

My son is a bartender/server and he makes on average $150 per night, so, I know he isn't like your examples.

I would fire those servers also...but, if I was the GM...I'd fire the managers!

When I was a retail manager- I always told my employees, You are only as good as your worst employee!

RACHEL1-933952,

so glad to know it isn't like that everywhere!

I worked as a waitress before, and I never treated people that way. I watched to make sure that everything was clean and ready for the customer before they even came in the door.

You are only as good as your worst employee!

So true!!!!!!

That is a real bummer Bonnie. Fast food places tend to give out receipts with 1-800 numbers posted on them for feedback or have a website that accepts feedback. You could ask the name of the manager and then mail a letter to him, or you can complain to the Department of Occupational Health and Safety. I like to eat somewhere clean, and I don't think I'm alone in that. Good luck!

There isn't any reason, as far as I can tell, that the tables can't be wiped off before people sit down to eat. People eat on the trays that come with their food, or they lay napkins down to put their food on them...I take it and go myself, but my husband likes to sit down and eat when he gets food...

I prefer to eat at home, or go to a nice place to eat...at least things at home are clean, and the nicer places at least wipe the tables off.

I agree Holly, I like to eat where things are clean also:)

Thank you for your thoughts:))

Are restaurants doing a good job where you live?

It kind of works both ways, wouldn't one think? The staff there has been given an "I don't have to care" attitude, and that did not come from their bosses. It come from their surroundings.

The last time I waitressed in "a well-known pizza place", I was pulling $2.13 per hour on my paycheck, working like a dog to try and take care of a newborn, and not doing such a fantastic job of it. I wasn't strong enough, and neither was my environment. Did the customers care? Of course not. It's not "professional" to have personal problems at work, even when work is actually one devil of a "personal problem".

I did, eventually, outgrow the service industry and learned not to bother trying to give a hoot whether your coffee was cold or your bacon was soggy. Those little bitty dollars here and there are just not worth it. And for those of you who "do" tip good? Be aware that there are 100 more of you who don't.

River,

Sounds like you had a tough time! I know what you mean about the little, bitty dollars! I sure didn't make a lot when I waitressed!

When I married my husband, he only gave $1.00 tips...He has now learned to tip well for 'good' service in a restaurant:))

He must really be something else altogether. One of the things I watch on a date is how they treat the staff. One dollar? Those are fighting words.

I did, indeed, have a lousy, awful terrifically terrible time. The men constantly harassed because they were "lonely" and made it clear that it was my responsibility to give a flying hello. Don't figure I'll ever do it again. Just don't have the heart and patience for 'em.

May I recommend the drive-thru next time for your pizza? Then your dinner isn't tainted by their indifference, and if the meal is no good at all, just take it back and throw it at them !!

He has gotten much better about tipping:) Lol...I got onto him about it a few times and explained to him how little a waitress was paid for all of her work, so now he tips the way he should:)) He just grew up in a stingy family, so he never thought anything about it until I told him differently:))

Yes, I had to deal with that too when I worked in a restaurant. I looked way younger than what I was, so guys thought I was single and available to go out...not:) I was married and had kids, lol. I got tired of the women who were rude...they were bossy and arrogant. That didn't set to well with me:D

I didn't mind the work though...

That's a very cute and modest article, Bonnie. I appreciate it.
You know, quality service often comes with the area and the perception of the providers about their potential customers. You must have felt disrespected that day, not by the pizza store's crew, but by the society. Use this experience to discover how the society operates on a discriminatory standard. The reason why you found this shocking is that you are used to neat restaurants with polite crew and you thought that was the standard everywhere. Well, no, my dear. When you enter a restaurant to eat, no matter who you are, the staff that used to serve their customers like pigs and faced no complaints, is not ready to serve you. If more people like you come in and go back out without buying because of the appearance of the place, they will make change for fear to not run out of business.

I once entered a chineese restaurant during a trip to Queens, New York. I was not familiar with the area to know where is a respectable area. I had some hunger to calm down. I went and ordered something to go ( I must say the restaurant looked clean though). I stayed and watched the cook prepare my order. She never stopped talking over the pan all the way with a co-worker. When she finaly set the food and handed to me, I asked her if that was my order, she say yes and I say, why were you talking all over it and spraying it? She remained mute and I walked away. I entered a deli store and bought me xome snack and a snapple. Peace.

Thank you Truth be told:)

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

You are right...people just do not complain about the lack of cleanliness in these places. I go in and see dirty tables, and no one says anything at all (including my dear husband). Why? I do not understand...it irritates me big time.

I am going to contact the corporate offices of these places, and the health dept.(again), and see if things will change...I do not enjoy eating in a place that is dirty, especially when it doesn't take but a few minutes to do a (good) job of wiping things off...and a good attitude really should go along with it...

If a person doesn't like waiting on people, find another job...it isn't fair to a paying customer to be treated disrespectfully. I know that when I asked the waitress to wipe our table, I was kind to her, not rude or demanding. She on the other hand was rude, and passive aggressive. I don't know what her problem was, but I told my husband I won't eat there again.

I went to a fast food burger place and ordered burger, fries, drink and a ice cream dessert. The burger came first, got cold, then the fries (while she was talking to a co worker) ...got cold while she was fixing my ice cream dessert. Of course the ice had started to melt because you get the cup to fill yourself. The only thing that was good was the dessert. Well I gave it one more try...not much improvement. That's the end of buying there. They weren't even busy except to gossip with each other.

Years ago waitresses only took orders and brought food, maybe flirted a little. Now they also seat customers, work the cash registers, and clean the tables. One person can do only so much.

The problem is they aren't doing anything...one person works the register, and the rest carry things out...and one picks up the dishes...but they aren't cleaning the tables.

And in the other places, there is one working the register and you pick the order up yourself...I don't know why the others don't clean things up. I have watched them standing around. They aren't doing anything. That is what irritates me...

I have worked as a waitress before, and with that job, I also baked pies in the morning, prepared salads and other foods, and cleaned tables...it was all in priorities, and my priority was excellent customer service. I could do all of it, and do a good job of it in a timely manner...

I'm a long time fill in the budget part timer at waiting tables. To stop and gossip with a coworker when the order is up was a firing offense. guess not anymore but leaving my food to get cold to gossip (they were that loud) that's a surefire way to lose a customer.

You need to do that! I think it would go over well...companies really need someone to check things out and report back to them in my opinion.

I don't know if that is being done or not, but I think that is a very clever idea:)

Way back (and I do mean way back) when I was in high school I worked for a regional fast food chain that used "mystery shoppers." The chain, which had a few hundred outlets, was divided into "districts," and they'd use employees from one district to check up on stores in another district.

The employees, especially the high school kids, loved to do it because not only were they on the clock, but they got paid for mileage and they didn't have to get greasy. :)

It was made very clear to every employee that a "mystery shopper" could pop in at any time, and, if there was anything amiss, the manager on duty heard about it.

I remember the first place I worked in had Mystery Shoppers. I actually received $10 from the MS one night. It suprised the heck out of me because I didn't think I'd done anything extraordinary (just the basics of the job) and of course that little ol' location was so far out of the way...What it all boils down to is the expectations laid down by the owners/management of a particular facility. If the managers/owners don't impress upon the other employees high expectations then the place will be run like crap. There was another restaurant in the same chain but a different owner the next town over that I never could understand how the health department would let them stay open. I ate there precisely once.
