The troubling trend reverses a 14-year decline and shows the infection, already on the uptick among gay and bisexual men, is worsening in the heterosexual community, the team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

If a woman is infected with syphilis while pregnant, her baby can be born dead, deaf, with other nerve damage or bone deformities. Antibiotic treatment at least a month before birth can prevent that.

This is a horrible thing to happen to little ones. They are totally innocent, yet they are the ones who have to pay for the things that their parent does.

It is so wrong, and so sickening...

Are there any tests to determine if the fetus is damaged so it can be aborted?

I don't know...it didn't say. But the thing is, the mother can take antibiotics and the unborn child won't be damaged...

All STD's are on the rise again because people are not using safe sex. People are just becoming too casual about sex. Just this last week I had two patients in the hospital with stage 3 syphillis who were there for long term antibiotics. It is sad. Parents are going to have to be strong in educating their kids about using condoms.

Teen girls need to be immunized with Gardisil and soon, hopefully, they will begin to immunize boys for the same. It is just imperative. There was an article this month in the Journal of Emergency Nursing about a 22 year old woman who developed an airway obstruction from getting the HPV virus in her airway from oral sex.

The bottom line is that unprotected sex is DANGEROUS. It is not just AIDS. There are so many other diseases out there that can have severe long term affects on your health. Gotta be safe. Comdoms period. And use them with oral sex as well. Any thing you can get via the penis or vagina you can get in the throat. Diane RN

I agree. If people are going to have sex, they need to protect themselves and others.

The best thing is abstinence, but we all know, people don't always do the right things...

Thank you for your comment Diane:)
